The Future of Cannabis Quality Control - 1st NMR Cannabis Meeting in Cologne
Cologne, November 15, 2018 - During the 1st NMR Cannabis Meeting, GECA Pharma spoke to an international consortium on the German cannabis market and the legal basis for the import, distribution and supply of medical cannabis.
More and more countries legalize cannabis for medical purposes and partly for recreational use. Accordingly, extensive quality control of cannabis is required. To respond to this request, Spectral Service AG has initiated the project "Quality and provenance testing of cannabis". The goal is the development of a chemical quality control by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
The purpose of this procedure is to build a database to distinguish between "legal GMP-compliant" and "illegal" cannabis. In addition, countries or areas where the raw material was grown can be determined. Processed products and finished-products are analyzed for composition, cannabinoid content and contamination.
The meeting focused on the analytical quality control of cannabis as a medicine. The "NMR Cannabis Meeting" brings together experts from the cannabis industry, authorities, researchers, testing laboratories and doctors. In this context, Johannes Gallois from GECA Pharma explained the complexity of GDP procedures and safety standards for the quality control of medical cannabis in Germany. He also explained the import procedure for medical cannabis and the legal requirements for handling narcotics.
For GECA Pharma it is of utmost importance to analyze the quality and origin of new medical products that qualify for further commercialization while ensuring patient safety.
GECA Pharma would like to thank Spectral Service AG for the event and all participants for the exciting exchange of experience!
